I am turning 24 soon and I can't help but freak out. I know what I am about to say next is going to sound very trivial compared to what is happening around the world now but I can't stop thinking that there will come a time when I would be considered too old to be in a fandom. Like what would happen when I turn 35/45/55?? Won't it be awkward? Would it be creepy if I still read ao3 fics in my 60s? I don't want to go away from the fandom space. It helps me so much to cope in this world.

my advice is to block and mute anyone who makes you feel that way and enjoy posting about batman with the other well-adjusted adults who like to enjoy things on the internet

most of the best fanfic is produced by women who are over thirty. older women aren’t just ‘still’ on AO3, they’re producing the highest-rated content. older women are the backbone of fandom and always have been: they are archivists, skilled costumers and writers, professional artists and editors and videographers and organizers. they run the fests, they code the archive itself, they volunteer, they watch out for people. they invented zines and webrings and conventions and cosplay and so many things kids just take for granted as natural parts of fandom.

mature, experienced women are hands down the most valuable resource any sphere of human activity can accrue. becoming one of them isn’t a tragedy, it’s an honor.

Every so often I post a fic and someone will comment on it asking, basically, “how do you do that?”

And the answer is, from the bottom of my heart: I’ve been practicing for longer than some of you have been alive. I posted my first fic online in October of 2002, when I was just about to turn 21, and I have continued writing and posting fic for going on eighteen years now, which means I am not far off from turning forty. I hope to keep it up for eighteen (and thirty-six, and fifty-four) more—and I’m guessing plenty of my readers hope the same.

If you want really good content for your fandom, you cannot chase away or shame the people who stick around long enough to get really good at producing it.

I got into fandom in the late 90′s. My fanfiction.net account turns 20 next month, some of my older stuff from my angsty high school years is still up and man is it awful. Not taking it down though because people liked it long ago. I am hopefully better now.

Anyway, someone says you’re too old for fandom, tell ‘em to go do their homework already, since they’ve clearly not left school yet.

I have fandom friends that are of all ages and I cannot be more grateful for that! These are people with experience you cannot buy!! They went through fandom and outside world shit I learned about way after it happened and it is vital for a community to be able to talk about those things. It’s also so helpful in real world ways too.

Having younger fandom friends is also so important ! They have knowledge of the youths of today, the new shit! And the absolute joy of being able to help them? Incredible!

You really suck at this bedside manner thing.
I know, I’m sorry.
But I appreciate the effort.

Do mine eyes deceive me?? Have you returned Tumblr?

Your eyes do not deceive you! I HAVE RETURNED! MUAHAHAHA!!!!

How consistent I’ll be is another matter, but I’m editing some fic at light speed right now, so for the moment, I’ll be hanging around to get inspiration from gifsets and others. :)

…now I just need to get a working phone. Ironically, I have a working laptop, but no working phone. Though I must say, the experience of not owning a cell phone has been LIBERATING. I think I went through actual withdrawal from my cell phone for a while there.

The Artist Known as HopeSetFree/Aquarius/RushingWind (otherwise known as Me)

For my friends heading over here from Discord for our yearly Sparktober celebration, I am Aquarius (or RushingWind). Follow me! :)

Having three handles isn’t confusing at all, is it? :) I’ve only been publishing fic and keeping up with people for 26 years now on different platforms (it was UseNet back in my day! Tumblr is MAGICAL compared to finding anything back then).

I do not know how to reconcile the three handles/usernames I’ve had over the years at this point. Like… I don’t even know how to try anymore lol.

WELP

So I haven’t been on Tumblr in a while, but I was browsing Twitter trying to find US Election stuff qnd saw Destiel was trending. Got confused, remembered the show is nearing its end, and thought, “No way, they didn’t actually make it canon, did they?”

Way. So, I came here, and now my memories of learning that Destiel finally became canon are tied with memes about Putin stepping down in Russia and also election memes.

Never change, Tumblr. Never change.

So yay that Destiel became canon, but… Cas died like exactly two seconds later? Seems a little crummy. I’m a little mixed on it, but the scene was beautiful. Misha Collins is amazing.

Pulling a Fic

There is a not-insignificant chance I will be pulling my fic “Blue Hour” from Ao3 and anywhere else on the internet in the nearish future. Feel free to download it in the meantime while it’s still up. If it’s down when you read this, I’m fine with people sharing it privately via email. I am not fine with it being reposted on another site, or hosted somewhere like Dropbox or Google Drive.

Obviously I can’t stop you from hosting it, but if you enjoyed the fic, please respect my wishes in this matter. Besides, if you can’t find it and want to read it, you can contact me and I’ll send you a pdf/mobi/whatever myself. I want you to enjoy it. I don’t hop on Tumblr but about once a week, so don’t sweat it if it takes me a few days to get back to you.

But why pull it, then? I have my reasons, plagiarism weighing heavily on my mind right now. The other reason is that I am in the process of publishing original fiction now, and I’ve been privately retweaking Blue Hour to see if it’s a candidate for P2P, or Pull To Publish. I’m still middle of the road on it right now and unsure, but with debacles like the fanfics.me mass fanfic theft from Ao3, wherein some of my fics were stolen (though thankfully not Blue Hour), I probably don’t have an unlimited amount of time to debate the issue. If it’s stolen and reposted without me having any control over it, I doubt I will want to try to publish.

I’m open to advice and ideas. If you’re against P2P, don’t want to see it come down, or think P2P is bad for fandom, feel free to tell me. I owe fandom for getting me to where I am now, and I still want to be a part of it!

Also, somewhat related: I will, somehow, still finish writing Yesterday’s Paradise… just when I’m not working two jobs and 70 hour work weeks.

FINALLY some good news

do-a-reference-properly:

Dear Authors,

We have good news for you!

Following the advice of the AO3 Legal Team (which has been prepared for a similar case with other site some time ago and published here), several Russian authors were able to remove from fanfics.me their works (initially posted on fan-works archives other than AO3) as well as ANY information about them (i.e. the title, the author, the summary and so on).

So now that we have confirmed that it is indeed a working method, and taking into the account this useful article “What Can Fans Do if Their Fanworks Actually Are Hosted Elsewhere” (https://archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/2692) at AO3, we strongly advise all the authors to send takedown requests for all your re-posted stories to the fanfics.me hosting provider.

We stress that this useful solution is general and works for all abused authors regardless where they publish the works (AO3, fanfiction.net or any other site). The authors do not need to put any tags to protect their works. You just need to report your author’s rights violation at the host site and request to delete your works from fanfics.me (we’ll call this site FFM for brevity’s sake) as well as any information about them.

You can report your author’s rights violation to the host by filling in the form at https://abuse.hetzner.com/issues/new?lang=en . Choose “Copyright violation” in the Category drop-down menu. Additionally, you need to insert 88.99.63.41 in the Source (you may check that the numbers are correct  here https://website.informer.com/fanfics.me ).

Next, in the Description field lay out your request to delete the stories that have been taken without your permission to FFM (either present all links to your stories appeared at FFM, or provide the link to the page on fanfics.me accumulating the list of all your works which you can access by clicking on author’s nickname in the work’s summary).

Add the proof that you are indeed the author of the stolen works. For that, you may give the link to your original profiles at the sites where your stolen stories were originally published by you.

Submit the request.

The host will send the request to the owner of the FFM and return his answer to you. Please, insist on deleting all your stories and even any information about them (title, author’s nickname, summary etc.) about them from that site.

You will probably get engaged in conversation with FFM’s owner via the host company (the host will forward your complaint to him and then will forward you his answers), he’ll lie about FFM functionality and compare it with Google and Dropbox and other services claiming that FFM is totally innocent. Be insistent! At some moment we got tired of this pointless exchange and asked the hosting company to stop all conversations with FFM’s owner and just resolve the complaint.

It worked! Moreover, every piece of information was deleted!

Please, help us to stop the spamindexing and the theft of your works! Report a takedown request for all your stories to the site that hosts the FFM! This is the only way to deal with such sites and the most useful solution to stop them! Please, help us to share this information! Spread the word!

P.S.: For your convenience, we provide our series of letters sent to the host site under the cut. You may use them as the examples. Please note that English is not our native language and we are sorry for any possible mistakes. Feel free to modify the text to match your needs.

Had one of my fics stolen and was informed my a stranger in the ao3 comments section, so I’m passing this along for anyone who posts their stuff to ao3!

malmao:

Hey, older fandom peeps, remember when faniction.net shot itself in the foot by purging all explicit work and from the ashes ao3 was born?

Guess history really does repeat itself huh?

I still weep at the amazing fics that were forever lost. There were such beautiful gems from older fandoms, which now, because of time, little survives.

Look at the robust fandom around you, whatever it may be. Imagine those comforting, favorite fics you revisit years after they’re written, years after the author has moved on. Then imagine a community just suddenly pulls the plug, and all. That. Fic. Is. Gone. That was the fanfiction.net purge. Overnight, without warning, anything with an explicit rating was all gone. Imagine that favorite fic you revisit often now gone forever, and no matter how hard you search, you can never find it again.

Imagine if AO3 suddenly vanished? We, as fans, can never take our communities, creators, conversations, meta, fandom history, and creations for granted.

Back up your blogs, even if you don’t plan on leaving. Just air on the side of caution, if nothing else. Learn from the tears shed by older fandom peeps like me when we lost priceless works of fanfiction and fanart in purges.

A personal example: In the 90s, Final Fantasy 4 and 6 had huge fandoms, with massive amounts of fic, but decentralized online communities. These were older games for the SNES, and people were bedazzled by Final Fantasy 7 right about then, but fan creators had come and gone and left us with magnificent works of fanfiction. These were the kind of epics you pray for, the long slow-burn romances with incredible, exciting plots. Obviously, there was trash, too, but that’s true everywhere. Then the fanfiction.net purge happened, and wiped most of the long epics of these now-retro games away. We didn’t have other sites to easily congregate and gather on, and so fanfiction.net had served as sort of a central point of reference. When the purge happened, it basically destroyed any cohesiveness in those fandoms, and the fans couldn’t find each other anymore.

Back up your blogs, and protect your art and fanfics. I promise you, there is someone out there who it means the world to.

And never take AO3 for granted.
